Upholstery Cleaning

Sofas, sectionals, chairs, and mattresses, cleaned by the method the fabric asks for. We read the manufacturer’s W, S, WS, or X code before anything touches it, and test a hidden area when the tag has been removed.

Upholstery Cleaning Questions, Answered

What West Michigan homeowners ask us most about furniture cleaning.

What do the W, S, WS, and X cleaning codes on my furniture mean?

Most upholstered furniture carries a manufacturer's cleaning code on a tag under a cushion or beneath the frame. W means water-based cleaning is safe. S means solvent only, because water will leave rings or shrink the fabric. WS means either method is acceptable. X means vacuum only, with no liquid at all. We check that tag before touching anything, and when the tag is missing or unreadable we test an inconspicuous area first.

What fabrics can you clean?

Microfiber, polyester, cotton, and cotton blends, linen, chenille, velvet, wool, and most synthetic blends, plus leather with the appropriate cleaner and conditioner. Delicate natural fibers such as silk, viscose, and rayon are handled with low-moisture or solvent methods because they water-mark easily. The method follows the fiber, not the other way around.

How long does upholstery take to dry?

Typically 4 to 8 hours for water-based cleaning, and often less for low-moisture and solvent methods. Good airflow speeds it up considerably. Running a ceiling fan or opening a window makes a real difference. We recommend staying off the piece until it is dry to the touch.

Can you get pet odor out of a couch?

Usually. Pet odor in furniture lives in three places: the fabric, the foam inside the cushions, and the deck underneath them. Surface cleaning only handles the first. We treat the cushions and the deck as well, which is why a KODA-cleaned sofa still smells clean weeks later. Odor that has fully saturated the foam core sometimes cannot be removed, and we will say so before starting.

Do you clean mattresses?

Yes, and it is one of the most worthwhile things you can have cleaned. A mattress accumulates sweat, skin cells, and dust mite allergens for years while a sheet hides all of it. We use a low-moisture method so the mattress dries quickly and is usable that night. Mattress cleaning is a common add-on for households with allergies or asthma.

Is fabric protector worth applying after cleaning?

On anything that gets daily use, yes. Protector does not make furniture stain-proof, but it buys you time. A spill beads on the surface for a minute or two instead of soaking straight into the fiber, and that minute is usually the difference between a wipe and a permanent mark. It is applied after cleaning, when the fibers are clean and receptive. Just ask when you book.
