Area Rug Cleaning Questions, Answered

What West Michigan rug owners ask us most. Something not covered? Call (616) 312-1900.

Do you pick up and deliver area rugs?

Yes. For in-shop cleaning we collect the rug from your home and bring it back when it is finished, so you never have to roll it, haul it, or fit it in a vehicle. Ask about pickup and delivery for your address when you call (616) 312-1900.

How long does area rug cleaning take?

In-home rug cleaning is done the same day, in the same visit as the rest of your cleaning. In-shop cleaning takes longer because the rug is dusted, washed, and then dried under controlled conditions. Rushing the drying stage is what causes shrinkage and color bleed. We give you a firm turnaround estimate when we assess the rug, so you know exactly when it is coming home.

Should my rug be cleaned in my home or in your shop?

It depends on the rug. Large synthetic and machine-made rugs in good condition clean beautifully in place. Wool, silk, antique, hand-knotted, and heavily soiled or pet-affected rugs do far better in the shop, where they can be fully dusted, immersion-washed if appropriate, and dried in a controlled environment. We assess the fiber, construction, and dyes before recommending either one.

Can you get pet urine out of an area rug?

Often, yes, and an area rug is usually a better candidate than wall-to-wall carpet because we can treat it from both sides in the shop. Urine wicks into the foundation of the rug and into whatever is underneath it, so we treat the rug itself and recommend checking the floor beneath. Long-standing contamination can leave permanent dye change, and we will tell you before we start if that is likely.

Do you clean the fringe on Oriental and Persian rugs?

Yes. Fringe is the foundation of a hand-knotted rug, not a decoration sewn on the end, so it is cleaned by hand and with care. Aggressive machine scrubbing is what causes the frayed, thinning fringe you see on rugs cleaned by volume operations.

How often should an area rug be professionally cleaned?

Every one to three years for most rugs, and annually for rugs in entryways, dining rooms, or homes with pets. Dry soil is abrasive: it sits at the base of the pile and cuts the fibers every time someone walks across it. Regular dusting and periodic professional cleaning is what keeps a good rug looking good for decades.
