Water Damage Questions, Answered

If you are dealing with an active leak or flood right now, stop reading and call (616) 312-1900.

What should I do first after a flood or burst pipe?

Stop the water at its source if you safely can, and shut off electricity to any affected area before walking into standing water. Lift what you can off wet carpet: furniture legs stain, and paper and cardboard wick. Photograph everything before anything is moved or removed; your insurer will want it. Then call (616) 312-1900. Do not wait for the insurance adjuster to authorize work: reasonable steps to limit further damage are expected of you, not penalized.

How fast do you respond to a water emergency in Holland?

As fast as we can get a truck to you. Our shop is at 100 S. Waverly in Holland and our trucks work the lakeshore and the Grand Rapids metro daily, so we are usually close by. Call (616) 312-1900 and we will tell you honestly how soon we can be there rather than giving you a number we cannot hit.

Will my homeowners insurance cover water damage cleanup?

It depends on the cause. Sudden, accidental events such as a burst pipe or a failed appliance hose are commonly covered; gradual leaks and surface flooding often are not, and groundwater flooding usually requires separate flood coverage. We document conditions, moisture readings, and the work performed so you have what your adjuster asks for. Coverage decisions are your insurer's to make. We can support the claim, not decide it.

How quickly does mold grow after water damage?

Mold can begin colonizing damp material within 24 to 48 hours under the right conditions. That window is the entire reason speed matters. Getting the water out and the structure genuinely dry, not just surface-dry, is what stops a water problem becoming a mold problem.

Do you handle sewage backups and contaminated water?

Yes. Restoration classifies water in three categories: clean supply-line water, gray water from appliances, and Category 3 black water from sewage or flooding, which carries genuine health risk. Category 3 requires containment, protective equipment, disposal of porous materials that cannot be safely restored, and sanitizing rather than simply cleaning. Tell us on the call what the source was so we arrive with the right equipment.

Can carpet and padding be saved after flooding?

Often the carpet can be saved even when the pad cannot. Pad is absorbent and cheap to replace, so with clean water it is frequently pulled, replaced, and the carpet re-laid and cleaned. With Category 3 water, porous materials generally have to go. We give you the honest recommendation for your situation rather than defaulting to whichever answer bills more.
